March 8, 2021: Kampala- Uganda; The International community of Women Living with HIV Eastern Africa (ICWEA) joins the rest of the world to commemorate the International Women’s Day (IWD) 2021 under the theme, A challenged world is an alert world” – #Choose to Challenge!

ICWEA is motivated by the theme and this year we choose to celebrate women and girls living with HIV who have made tremendous milestones in challenging the status quo in their lives,  journeys as well as touching the lives of other women in all their diversity around the world.

#Choose to Challenge motivates ICWEA to dare and speak out about issues that keep pushing women living with HIV down and on the sidelines and is an encouragement to all women to make a choice and challenge the status quo.

ICWEA #Chooses to remember and celebrate the lives of women influencers and leaders at all levels who have made a positive change in the lives of women living with HIV and have been at the helm of women movement building in Eastern Africa.   –those with us today, and those who did not make it to the finishing line, but whose stories we tell.

In commemoration of the International Women’s Day 2021, ICWEA will recognize, celebrate and AWARD the efforts of women who are Fighters, Intelligent, Empowered, Resilient, Courageous and have Excelled (F.I.E.R.C.E)!  Women who will have put their lives in harm’s way in order for other women to realize their rights, dreams and potential.   The 2021 ICWEA F.I.E.R.C.E AWARD will go to women who will have dared to cause change and in ensuring better health care services and improved policies and practices; who will have challenged all forms of stigma discrimination and advocated for human rights protection and promotion including Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)of women living with HIV in their diversity.

ICWEA congratulates all women living with HIV who against all odds have made great achievements that illuminate the power of Women in our community.  We  urge women living with HIV to actively challenge unfair treatment at all levels; Women in leadership positions, in decision making levels and all women in law enforcement spheres to speak up for a world  free from stigma, discrimination, HIV criminalization and a world where the HIV status of women in all their diversity does not act as a yardstick for ability, beauty and intelligence.
