The International AIDS Society (IAS) has announced an up to 23% reduction in registration fees for AIDS 2016 in Durban, South Africa taking place between July 18 and 22.
This is part of the IAS’ commitment to making AIDS 2016 inclusive and accessible. This comes as a relief to civil society organisations (CSOs) involved in the HIV response who are considerably suffering from funding shortages. AIDS 2016 is crucial for civil society networks to connect, exchange and step up our efforts to improve the lives of all people living with HIV. The reduced registration fees is an opportunity for more CSOs and community groups to meaningfully participate in the upcoming international gathering.
To ensure wide participation in the conference, AIDS 2016 is also providing a number of new provisions to financially support conference participation. In addition to reducing the registration fees, AIDS 2016 will provide an additional 200 registrations as part of the newly created Civil Society Access Initiative to increase the number of civil society participants from sub-Saharan Africa.
Reduced registration cost comes with an extension of the early registration deadline to 28 April at the newly decreased registration rate. Individuals who have already paid will be reimbursed the difference.
These changes are in addition to the historic commitments that AIDS 2016 has already made, which include:
- Doubling the number of scholarships provided for young researchers and civil society
- Substantial investments in free public access space at the conference
- Financial support to our civil society partners
As one of the organisers, ICWEA hopes that these efforts will help ensure that AIDS 2016 is the most inclusive and representative International AIDS Conference ever.
AIDS 2016 will provide a crucial opportunity for scientists, public health leaders, front-line health workers, advocates, and others dedicated to fighting HIV to come together as a global community to establish a clear path forward to end AIDS.
