Our Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights Priorities, November 2010, Johannesburg, South Africa
In response to the African Union’s efforts and our Heads of States’ commitments to women and girls on this continent, women and young women living with HIV from Eastern and Southern Africa have gathered at a historic meeting. The meeting aimed to identify strategies to better address the sexual and reproductive health rights and needs of women and girls living with HIV. The specific focus of the meeting was to highlight issues presented by the country representatives such as recurrent abuses in healthcare services, lack of access to information and/or services for cervical cancer, high rates of sexual violence and abuses as well as harmful cultural practices such as Female Genital Mutilation. These rights violations are a major cause and consequence of HIV for women in Africa.
The meeting in Johannesburg brought together 40 women living with HIV from Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia & Zimbabwe; the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria to support the development of the International Community of Women living with HIV in East and Southern African (ICW) sexual and reproductive health rights advocacy strategy.

  1. Nancy Imali

    Good day!
I hope this email finds you well. My name is Nancy, a radio journalist working with a community/learning radio station in Kakamega, Western Kenya and I run a weekly radio programme on HIV and AIDS in conjuction with the AIDS CONTROL UNIT at my place of work; 103.9 MMUST FM.

I have read widely about your activities, and I am most interested to further know what you do, other activities that you undertake here in Kenya, and if there’s a way that your organization can incorporate radio journalists in your team to help spread your agenda. Especially those that produce programs in tandem with your agenda.

May I ask, do you have a network of journalists across the region that are able to help with your agenda? My interest lies with the possibility that I might be able to generate news stories from activities you undertake or positive broadcast programs to our listener-ship and much more.

Awaiting a positive response from you.

    Kind Regards,
    Nancy Imali
