The International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS Eastern Africa joined the rest of the World to Commemorate the World AIDS Day Celebration in Burundi
The Occasion which was organized by the MoH Burundi took place at Buterere Grounds and attended by over 50 ICW Burundi members was attended and many other people who included other CSOs, Bi Lateral Organisations, people living with HIV and the Buterere Community members.
It was commemorated with the theme “Together for accelerating the Elimination of HIV transmission of mother to child and universal access to antiretroviral treatment by the end of 2015 in Burundi”
ICWEA and ICW Burundi theme was “Your responsibility is to partner with Women Living with HIV in improving health service delivery and accountability to END the HIV Epidemic”
In her speech, the Minister for Health said that one of the PMTCT targets for Burundi was to have No Child Born with HIV by 2020, calling on the Health Care workers to treat the Women Living with HIV with dignity when they visit the health facilities but also end the stigma and discrimination against People living with HIV.
“Mothers should be encouraged to come and seek services”. She added on. She commended the role of Women living with HIV in the elimination of mother to Child transmission.
The Regional Chairperson of ICWEA Ms. Adrianne Munene said that for women to access all these services, there should be maximum effort to ensure that Stigma and Discrimination is eliminated, and that women living with HIV are meaningfully involved, and their needs and priorities in this program are addressed if the set targets are to be achieved.
