In the heart of Bujumbura-Mairie resides a woman whose life story is woven with threads of resilience, faith, and unwavering dedication to others. My name is MUNENE NDUWIMANA Adrienne, known affectionately as “Child of God” and recognized by my surname in all domains as “Active.” Allow me to share with you the chapters of my life, each page marked by trials, triumphs, and a relentless pursuit of purpose.
Family has always been the cornerstone of my existence. Born in Muheka on July 22, 1957, I emerged as the second child in a bustling family of ten siblings. From my youth, I assumed roles of responsibility, guiding my brothers and sisters with love and care. Our bond was unbreakable, our laughter infectious, and our shared moments a testament to the joy found in familial love.
The narrative of my life took an enchanting turn when I encountered a Burundian pen pal studying in Greece. Our connection blossomed into a profound love, culminating in a union sealed under the sacred vows of marriage at the Regina Mundi Cathedral in Bujumbura on March 22, 1980. Together, we embarked on a journey of harmonious companionship, blessed with four children, their spouses, and a brood of seven grandchildren. Each passing year, our family gatherings became celebrations of love, marked by surprise gifts, heartfelt songs, and the enduring bond of kinship.
Yet, amidst the joys of family life, I found solace in spiritual devotion. Prayer became the cornerstone of our household, a sanctuary open to all who sought solace and guidance. With my beloved husband, we knelt in reverent communion every morning and evening, offering supplications of gratitude and seeking divine guidance in all our endeavors.
My pursuit of knowledge and service led me down paths illuminated by the light of education and professional growth. From the halls of academia to the corridors of Kamenge University Hospital, I dedicated eighteen years to service, navigating the realms of finance and internal control with diligence and expertise. But it was my calling to the care service for PLHIV at the Burundian Network of PLHIV that ignited the flame of purpose within me. For nineteen years, I labored tirelessly, advocating for the rights and well-being of those affected by HIV/AIDS, a cause close to my heart.
My journey as an HIV positive person has been one marked by trials and triumphs, resilience and hope. The revelation of my diagnosis in 1987 brought with it a storm of uncertainty and fear. Yet, anchored by faith and fortified by prayer, I resolved to defy the odds and embrace each day with unwavering courage. With the advent of ARVs in 2001, I embarked on a journey of healing and restoration, guided by the unwavering support of my community and the solidarity of Burundian soldiers.
Today, as I reflect on the chapters of my life, I am filled with gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon me. My journey is a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and unwavering dedication to a cause greater than oneself. And as I continue to tread the path of purpose, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and a spirit emboldened by the belief that with faith, hope, and love, all things are possible.
